LIF is a cytokine which was primarily described as a product of activated T lymphocytes and macrophages. It plays a major role in human inflammatory lung diseases and it is involved in acute and chronic inflammations including pneumonia, Rheumatoid arthritis, carcinoma (adenocarcinoma, mesothelioma, melanoma) and peritonitis.
