Immune Response, Infection and Inflammation

Summary

The complement system might play a role in many diseases with an immune component, such as Barraquer-Simons Syndrome Alzheimer's disease, asthma, lupus erythematosus, various forms of arthritis, autoimmune heart disease and multiple sclerosis. Deficiencies of the terminal pathway predispose to both autoimmune disease and infections (particularly meningitis). C3d binds covalently to erythrocytes (E-C3d) to form a stable long-lived cell-bound marker. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have found that measurement of these cell-bound complement activation products is useful in monitoring disease activity.
