Summary
Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a 28-amino acid neuropeptide belonging to the secretin/glucagon family of peptide hormones. It is primarily produced by neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems, especially in the enteric nervous system, and by endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and lungs. VIP plays a key role in regulating smooth muscle relaxation, secretion of water and electrolytes in the intestines, and modulation of immune responses.
Clinically, VIP is an important biomarker for diagnosing rare neuroendocrine tumors called VIPomas, as elevated serum levels are highly specific and help identify the cause of severe secretory diarrhea (WDHA syndrome). Recent studies also highlight the potential of VIP as a marker in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and as a possible indicator of disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or osteonecrosis.
